Why coral reef restoration is a big deal.
This 45 minute video of a presentation Jack made while a passenger on a Viking Cruise ship, on the Great Barrier Reef. It is about the latest technology in the field of saving Coral Reefs.
The 2020 model is being built for the 2020 spawning season. Here is a visual about the improvements we call Coral Kindergarten 3.0
kelly latijnhouwres Was one of the principal designers of the coral Kindergarten. In this short movie she explains what is happening with coral restoration. Why it is a team effort, and the different things that have to happen to bring corals back.
The Coral Kindergarten 2.0 is now in use, and the results are good. Here are a couple of pictures. The design includes improved reingforced stronger rope channels, 12 in diameter tubes, a new canopy design with the water potable fabric. Please have a look at the slide show that shows the evolution of this system. They have proved it works. The corals planted just 18 months ago with the original system (not JPW built) are now getting close to producing their own offspring. Now we need to see how far this Idea goes.
Here are the 2019 model 2.0 pictures.
Checking 2.0 for fit of the substrate crates.
Crates hanging in the water with substrates.
The new canopy design with water pottable fabric attached.
2.0 First immage shows the system with crates loaded with substrates that the larvae settle on. The second immage shows the system with the canopy on top. Most spawning events happen durring the rainy season, so to maintain the proper salinity of the water at the top where the Larvae swim aroud, they need a canopy to keep rain water out. 2.0 New features include: easier to install top frame. and canopy. improved rope attachment system, 12 inch diameter tubes (1.0 had 9 inch dia tubes) Canopy made of pottable water fabric, Double layer windows, and improved bottom zipper system. The Bottom frame has extensions that help hold it down without the need for weights.
2020 model is comming out in the spring of 2020, and we call it 3.0. It will have these new added features that make it easier to set up, and to transport both on the sea, and kpackaged up in the air.
The 2018 model that was successfully tested. We call it 1.0

1 billion people rely on the food produced in coral reefs, and world-wide reefs have diminished by at least 30 % as of 2015. These are carbon fixing animals. If you do not believe me you can look at the Red Wall Limestone in the Grand Canyon. That is all CaCO3 or calcium carbonate, and there is a lot of it. Mostly made by corals and other sea creatures that have shells, but mostly corals. The carbon sequestered in this way is set in stone literally. Unlike carbon sequestered by forests, this will not decompose over time. Watch the show chasing corals. I want to warn you, you will cry. It is available on Netflix.
As I tell my son, “one man’s problem, is another man’s pay check” and even though we may not be able to produce all of the tanks that may be needed to “reforest” dying coral reefs, we have to try. After all it is an ecosystem, and it is responsible for the health of the ocean, which gives us 70% or our oxygen.
Personally, I could not come up with anything that is a bigger deal than saving the planet. I love this place, and even though Elon Musk has a point about colonizing other planets, I do not want to leave. So, lets knuckle down, and save this system. We can do it with your help. Buy solar panels. Use green electricity. Drive an electric car. Learn what you can about climate change and what you can do to reduce its effects. On top of that list is saving coral reefs, and forests. Think about your great grandchildren. They need you now!

Watch these videos and read more about coral gardening. It is not just about coral sexual reproduction. However maintaining genitic diversity, and the possibility of Hybridization is a big part of the puzzle.
With more than 30 years experience saving coral reefs, Dr Bowden- Kerby has a lot of information for us to look at. If you only have time to view one video see the first one on the list.
