Corner Condoms -why they work so well
Paco Pad customers often ask, “Why is the corner reinforcement not welded down all the way? Wont dirt get in there? Why did you do it like that?”
Here are a couple of pics of a corner condom repair. This pad actually fell off the load and drug on the road for some distance. You will note that the un-welded flap is worn clean through, but there is no hole in the corner of the pad. Unfortunately the rest of the pad suffered some road rash to, but those places are easier to fix than the corner.
The answer to that question is a bit complicated. First the part that is not welded down allows for more wear to occur before the skin is compromised. This includes the edge of the patch if it were welded down. In other words. Being floppy allows a better wear characteristic. We hope these pictures show the story clearly.
It may seem counter intuitive to leave part of the wear patch un-welded, but this involuntary test shows that it really does work.
Does it gather up dirt? Yes it will do that if you drag it along the ground. That is exactly what river customers will do before they get their first cup of coffee. The dirt and sand will fall our fast, and does not seem to do any damage. In fact you will not notice it unless you look for it, and sometimes you will not find any. I tell customers it is sort of like dirt in your belly button. Out of sight and out of mind.
By the way, this is how we repaired the corner. We simply welded another corner condom over the old one.
