Inflatable Paddle Board Care & Maintenance
High pressure in the board and the hot sun:
Leaving inflatable ISUP out in the hot sun, tightly inflated, can result in damage to your board. If you are going to transport your board inflated, and leave it on the top of your car for a long time, please deflate the board to around 5 psi. This is still a very firm pressure. This hot weather has a potential of causing damage to boards that sit around in the heat under pressure.
Out in the ocean, we started learning at 15 psi, but as we got better (the ocean is a more difficult balancing act than the river) we started cutting down the pressure just because that last 5 psi is harder to pump into the board, and was a lot of work. What we are starting to do is pump them to 10 psi and then deflate them slightly at the end of the paddle session. Check out what 5 psi feels like when you are inflating for the first time. It is not difficult to get a board to 10 psi, but the last 5 PSI to 15 psi is a bit more difficult even with a super pump. It is important to have the security of the extra pressure when you are paddling, but it could cause damage to your board if it sits out in the hot sun at those pressures.
Rolling your paddle board up for storage:
Please fold your board front to back. The last fold in the back should allow the fin boxes to lie flat for storage so they do not distort. If you roll up your board and put it in a hot car, the fin boxes can distort from the heat, or over time in the garage, especially if the fold or roll is forcing them to distort. The valve is at the back, and there is a space to make the last fold between the fin boxes. If you keep this part of the board flat, the fin boxes will not distort in storage.
Flying with your paddle board:
The corners of your padaddle board when rolled up present wear spots. To keep these from getting holes try this idea. This image shows what I am talking about. The folded edge makes a spot that wears out easily, but protecting it is easy too.
We have flown with these paddle boards many times. I have found that the best way to protect them against airline damage is to use the bag that we give you, but to first put the paddle board in 2 garbage bags. Garbage bags are polyethylene, and polyethylene is one of the best self-lubricating plastics, and is abrasion resistant. When the board is folded properly, it will still have sharp folded corners of fabric that present a point which can stick out and be abraded, especially if the bag gets rubbed through in transport. Using two garbage bags provides a lubricated surface that reduces this possibility significantly. In this way you will be able to use your board without having to do a repair.
